GuestLinX Technical Support FAQ

Checking Your Web Browser Settings

There are several configuration settings within a Web browser that can cause problems. See below for the configuration settings that are needed to connect to GuestLinX high-speed Internet access.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (for Windows)

Netscape Navigator (for Windows)

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator for Macintosh

Microsoft Internet Explorer (for Windows)

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" and then select "Internet Options" from the menu, as shown below:

This will load a window like this:

Click on the "Connections" tab to load this screen:

On this screen, make sure that the dot is next to either "Never dial a connection" or "Dial whenever a network connection is not present." It's fine if the options are grayed-out, as shown above. Once this is done, click on "LAN Settings ... " in the bottom right. This will load a screen that looks like this:

On this screen, nothing should be checked. If "Use automatic configuration script" or "Use a proxy server" is checked, simply uncheck them. Internet Explorer will save these settings, so you don't need to worry about writing down the settings. When this is done, simply click "OK" until you are back to the main Internet Explorer screen. Then try to go to a public Web site to finish the connection process. If you're connected successfully, you'll be taken to the GuestLinX Welcome Page.

If you still can't connect, see the "Checking Your IP Address" section or call GuestLinX Technical Operations Center toll-free at 1-800-266-3585.

Netscape Navigator (v4.5 +) (for Windows)

To check for proxy servers in Netscape Navigator, first open the program. Click on "Edit" at the top, as shown below, and then click on "Preferences."

This will load a window that looks like this:

Click on the right arrow next to the word "Advanced" to expand the menu, as shown. Then select "Proxies" to open a window that looks like this:

To disable any proxy settings you may have, click on the circle next to "Direct connection to the Internet." Please note that any settings that you have specified will be saved, so you don't need to write them down. When the dot is next to "Direct connection to the Internet," click "OK." Now try and go to a public Web site to complete the connection process. If you're connected successfully, you'll be taken to the GuestLinX Welcome Page.

If you still can't connect, see the "Checking Your IP Address" section or call GuestLinX Technical Operations Center toll-free at 1-800-266-3585.

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator for Macintosh

To check the browser settings in Internet Explorer on a Macintosh, open the program, then click on "Edit" and go to "Preferences." Look through the list of options on the left side until you see the "Network" heading; click on the right arrow. You should now see an option labeled "Proxies." Click on that and in the screen on the right make sure that you do not have a proxy enabled.

You check the browser settings in Netscape Navigator on a Macintosh the same way as you do in Windows. See the Netscape Navigator for Windows section above for more information.

Note: There are proxy programs that are used that will also prevent you from seeing the GuestLinX Welcome Page. Some of the more-common programs are: Winsock Proxy (WSP), Microsoft Proxy, and Wingate. These programs typically can be accessed from the Control Panel. For information on disabling these proxies, please contact your IT department or the program's manufacturer.

Also, IBM has a particular file called "socks.cnf" that can cause problems with the service. Please contact GuestLinX Technical Operations Center toll-free at 1-800-266-3585 for assistance with this issue.

If you still can't connect, see the "Checking Your IP Address" section or call GuestLinX Technical Operations Center toll-free at 1-800-266-3585.
