Specifying your SSID and checking configuration for Lucent Orinoco Wi-Fi cards, using the Orinoco Client Manager

Those using the newer Lucent Orinoco Wi-Fi cards (v7.x or higher of the drivers) will need to have the Orinoco Client Manager installed in order to specify the SSID.

Older versions of the Lucent Wi-Fi cards, called WaveLan cards, do not require a Client Manager to specify the SSID. Find out how to configure your Lucent WaveLan card.

Look in the System Tray (by the clock) for a symbol similar to the icon with the box around it:

Double click on the Orinoco icon and a window will open that looks like this:

At this point, you will need to click on the "Actions" menu and select "Add/Edit Configuration Profile." This will open a screen that looks like this:

Unless a GuestLinX connection is already a profile choice, select an empty profile choice. Enter "GuestLinX Connection" as an identifier. Next, make sure that the dropdown menu on the right is set to "Access Point," then click on "Edit Profile" to open a window like this:

Where it says "Network Name," type in the appropriate SSID, "guestlinx" (without the quotes, case-sensitive). Then click on the "Encryption" tab to bring up this window:

On this window, make sure that "Enable Data Security" is unchecked. After confirming that "Enable Data Security" is disabled, click "OK" until the Orinoco Client Manager window is the only window open. Make sure that the dropdown menu in the upper right corner has the profile named "GuestLinX Connection" selected. There should be green bars above where it says "Signal Strength."

If the color is yellow, then you are connected but are on the outside of the range of the wireless access point. Try moving closer to the access point for better signal strength. If you do not have a signal at all (the bars are all white except the smallest bar, which is red with an "x"), make sure you are in a location that is covered by the GuestLinX wireless service. If you believe that you are in the correct area and are still not getting a connection, please call GuestLinX Technical Operations Center toll-free at 1-800-266-3585.
