Connecting More Than One Hub in a Meeting Room

To begin, connect the first hub as explained in "Connecting a Hub in a Meeting Room," then plug a crossover Cat. 5 Ethernet cable into one of the ports on the first hub. Next, take the other end of the crossover cable and plug it into the port marked "UPLINK" on the second hub. If your hub does not have an "UPLINK" port, simply plug the cable into port 1. Some ports will have a button that indicates an uplink status or a normal status. Make certain that the button is set for uplink. Verify that there is a link light on the "UPLINK" port of the second hub.

Now you are ready to connect multiple computers. Starting with the computers off, plug them into the numbered ports on each hub using Cat. 5 Ethernet cables (non-crossover). Turn on the computers and open a Web browser. If a Web page is loaded, the hubs are connected and working properly.

Multiple hubs and computers properly networked should look similar to the image below. For optimum data transfer speed, the type of cables MUST be as shown. You can use normal straight-through Ethernet cables in place of crossover cables, but the uplink port MUST be in normal port mode (not UPLINK mode); data-transfer rates will not be as fast with the hubs connected this way.

Note: If the service is not working through the hub, try bypassing the hub. More than two hubs can be connected using the technique discussed above.
