Network Card Information
To access the GuestLinX service, you will need a notebook computer equipped with either:
1) a Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless Ethernet network interface card for wireless access OR
2) a standard (802.3) wired Ethernet card and cable (most hotels have cables available for use) for wired access in hotel guestrooms and meeting rooms.
Many newer notebook computers have built-in Ethernet cards. For those that do not have a built-in Ethernet card, a PCMCIA Ethernet card (available at any computer store) will work.
Wi-Fi Wireless Cards
When purchasing a wireless card, look for the Wi-Fi-certified logo, which indicates that the product has been tested for interoperability with other 802.11b devices. The Wi-Fi certification is awarded by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), an industry consortium whose members include most of the leading PC and networking companies, as well as
GuestLinX.
Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless Ethernet cards are available from major networking vendors such as Lucent, Cisco, 3Com, Intel, Sony, Symbol, Xircom, D-Link, and Buffalo. Wi-Fi cards have become very common and are available at most computer stores and through many online retailers. Leading PC manufacturers such as Dell, Compaq, IBM, Toshiba, and Apple also are offering wireless cards with their notebook computers and/or selling wireless-integrated notebooks.
See the WECA Web site for a current list of Wi-Fi-certified PC LAN cards and other devices.
